If you have wanted to for awhile or are thinking about going back to school then you have found the right place. Going back to school is a big decision and where and how you do is just as big of a decision. If you are reading this article then you undoubtedly have thought about furthering your education and getting your degree from an online school. Before you go ahead and do so there are some things you may want to know first that will hopefully help you make the right choice.

The first thing you need to be aware of is that there are a lot of diploma mills out there. By “diploma mill” I mean a place that passes them selves off as online schools that basically sell you a diploma. This must be avoided at all cost because these fake diplomas are useless when trying to get a job. It’s extremely easy to find out if a particular school or program is accredited by the local governing agency by just calling them and asking and then verifying that with the agency.

To be more specific about accreditation you must understand that there are many different levels that come with being accredited. When checking up on a college’s accreditation you first need to find out by whom the whole college is accredited. An endorsement by the Department of Education is usually a sign that the college and all of its courses as a whole are highly qualified and meet your particular states standards for quality education. If a particular college is not endorsed by the Department of Education then it is usually a sign that the particular college is not a good choice.

By doing this for several colleges you will undoubtedly find a long list of potential schools that you want to attend. The next step is to find out the courses they offer. This should narrow your list down by a lot considering that some schools might not offer the particular degree you seek.

Your next step is to check up on the accreditation of the particular course you are interested in. Most of the time particular fields of study have specific governing bodies within the state. These overseers usually approve specific college courses and give them their stamp of approval. This step is just as important as then first one considering that most employers look at accredited courses and not accredited schools.

Now for the fact that distance education is on the rise and there are many different quality school popping up all the time there is always the chance that you will find a school that offers exactly what you need but the school is not accredited. If you find this to be your case there is still hope. Just because a particular school is not accredited does not mean that it is a bad school. In some cases new schools are still in the process of getting their accreditation. So if you are in a position where the school you found is not accredited you can easily check with the Department of Education and see if that particular school is in the process of getting its accreditation.

So now you must know that if your going to get an online degree you must make sure that it is highly accredited or else it’s worthless. Ask questions and use the strategy above and you will be on your way to getting you degree faster then you thought possible.
